The Hathaway Brown Middle School kicked off its year-long partnership with The Up Side of Downs bright and early last weekend by volunteering at their 16th annual Buddy Walk, which took place at the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo on Saturday, August 27, 2016.
An enthusiastic group of thirty Middle School students and parents distributed t-shirts, directed traffic, and cheered on the walkers as they crossed the finish line. The smiles, high-fives, and fist bumps were plentiful at this inspiring event.
Last spring, the Middle School students selected The Up Side of Downs to be our 2016-2017 partner in service and philanthropy. Their mission is to provide support, education, and advocacy for people with Down syndrome, their families and communities. Our dress-down day funds will be awarded to The Up Side of Downs, and we will continue to volunteer at their future family events. We are excited to meet more buddies and to strengthen our relationship with this amazing organization. In honor of our partnership, the student body sang Jack Johnson’s “Upside Down” at our first hootenanny of the year. The lyrics prove a perfect reminder as to why we volunteer and stay active in our community; we can share our love with everyone, bring about change, and make the impossible possible.
Many thanks to the students and their mothers who joined us at the Zoo this past Saturday! Stay tuned for future opportunities to be involved!
