Members of Hathaway Brown’s GROW Foundation are often asked: “If you had $1,000 to donate to the cause of your choice, where would you donate it and why?” This line of question was front and center at GROW’s annual benefit on May 24.
“Girls Pitch In” featured a live pitch by three GROW grantees that focus on female empowerment. Representatives from Girls for the World, Merrick House and the Cleveland Christian Home each made presentations to a live audience and then fielded questions. At the end of the pitch, the audience was challenged to make donations to one or more of these organizations and/or to GROW in support of the 2016-2017 giving cycle. The pitch provided the audience with a taste of GROW’s proposal review process, whereby members are forced to make difficult decisions about how to allocate scarce dollars in support of worthy causes. In total, the pitch generated approximately $1,000 in donations.
In addition, that evening, GROW awarded approximately $18,000 in grants to 22 nonprofits in Cleveland and beyond. Members of both the Middle and Upper School branches of GROW presented the awards, delivered personal testimonies about their experiences with philanthropy and service, and showed a year in review video created by Regan Brady ’17.
